S.T.E.A.M Club Vex Robotics Team

Big congratulations to our S.T.E.A.M. Club Vex Robotics Team, who won the top prize in the Vex IQ Competition at the LOETB S.T.E.A.M. Programme Showcase event at Portlaoise College in April. The team won the trophy, €1000 equipment for the school and €500 for themselves.

Fresh Film Awards

On the 13th of March our STEAM film makers travelled to the Omniplex, Rathmines, Dublin where their short film ‘Seiceamair’ has been chosen as a regional finalist for the Fresh Film Festival Young Filmmaker of the Year.

The team’s short film, directed by Jack Marshall and starring Cameron O’ Sullivan and Daniel Reilly, which is described as a ‘drama comedy as Gaeilge’, tells the story of a boy who cannot afford lunch for school, and ends up in a battle of wits with infamous chess guru, Magnus.

They are now into the All Ireland Final. They have been chosen as the Leinster regional winner and will compete for the overall Young Filmmaker of the Year in Limerick in April, an event that will be screened on RTE.

Director Jack Marshall was interviewed on hearing their success. Watch the interview on X by clicking here.

FLL Robotics Team

22nd of February 2024

Team members:

  • Darragh Egan, (Engineer, Coder and Team Captain)
  • Freya Maher (Graphic Designer),
  • Tim Lally (Coder),
  • Colm Shaw, (Engineer),
  • John Searson (Engineer)
  • Alex Sullivan (Coder)

The team were accompanied by teachers Ms. Clarke, Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Mullery to the LOETB information Hub in Tullamore to represent Banagher College at the LOETB First Lego League regional final, which was an event designed for the nine LOETB schools and part of the wider LOETB S.T.E.A.M. Program.
The robotics team built a Lego robot, called ‘Banana Bot’ to compete in the arena, which also involved coding the robot to compete different tasks. The team also produced a presentation on the innovation side of the competition, which involved them picking a problem in their school/community and solving it. The team chose Banagher College’s TY Pantomime and the issue of reduced visibility because of the stage design. The team designed a new tiered stage and built it as a prototype in Minecraft. Because of the high quality of their innovation and presentation, the team were awarded a trophy for ‘Best Innovation Project’ and came back to the school with a win in their pockets!
