Particular mention must go to Declan O Neill who won gold in the intermediate boys 800m and also to James Daly who annexed a silver medal jumping an extraordinary 1.61m in the Intermediate Boys High Jump.
This year’s Sportshall athletics took place in Sacred Heart Youth Centre Tullamore on the 6th February. Our team of first and second years performed admirably and we brought home medals in both the 2nd year boys and 2nd year girls categories with the girls finishing third and the boys first in their respective competitions. Well done to all to participated and Mr Verney.

Cross Country Running
The annual South Leinster Cross Country Athletics Championships took place in Clongowes College, Clane, Co. Kildare on the 25th January 2012. A large contingent travelled from Banagher College and out of 22 starters all 22 finished this rigorous test of endurance, determination and willpower. Particular credit must be given to the Intermediate boys’ team of Ronan Hughes, Declan O’Neill, Enda Scully, James Daly, Jason Adam, Ronan Butler, Gavin Troy and Liam Tierney who finished in 5th place (out of over 30 teams) in the team event. Well done to all who took part and it is hoped that many of these athletes will now go on to the South Leinster Track and Field Championships in Kilkenny in May.
Co. Offaly V.E.C. Sports:
Banagher College – Colaiste na Sionna Athletics Team enjoyed a very successful day at the Offaly V.E.C. Sports, which took place recently in the Tullamore Harriers.
The team - coached by Mr. M. Verney - produced some outstanding performances, eventually bringing home a record number of individual medals. All teams competed strongly on the day. However, it was a particularly capable intermediate team who outclassed the opposition to finish first in their section. This was through a combination of some fine individual performances, as well as clinical gold medal winning performances by both boys and girls relay teams, allowing joint captains Declan O' Neill and Mairead Daly to claim the trophy for the school for the first time in some years. The level of performance of the Banagher athletes was impressive throughout and certainly bodes well for the future.
This year Banagher College were the organising school for the competition and great credit must also go to Mr. Verney again here for taking on the challenge and doing all the hard work required in making the day such a success.
