Green Schools

Banagher College, Coláiste na Sionna received Green Flag

After a number of years of hard work and dedication, we were awarded the International Green Flag at the offices of An Gaisce, the National Trust for Ireland in Dublin.  The flag was presented by Olwyn Enright TD and accepted by students Fiona Carroll, Áine Stones, Stephaine Barry and Damien Kelly along with Mr Duggan.

This is a great honour for the school and everybody was proud when we had the actual flag raising ceremony on March 16th 2007.  The ceremony in the school was attended by the staff, students and local dignatories.

What is a Green Flag?

Green Schools is an international project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole school action for the environment.  It offers a well defined controllable way for you to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of the school.  This process helps pupils to recognise the importance of envirnomental issues and take them more seriously in their personal and home lives.  Green Schools is both a programme and an award scheme.

The award is given to shcools that complete the seven steps of the programme.  Having achieved the Green Flag status  we will continue the programme and after two years we hope to apply for our second flag which will be based on energy.

Thanks to everybody who helped us achieve the Green Flag.
