Science Week

Mad Scientists in Banagher! - The following events were organised to mark Science Week.

The first was a visit to W5 the science museum in Belfast. The 3D class along with Ms. Hassett and Ms. Broderick visited the museum which has numerous exhibits that explain chemistry, physics and biology. As part of the visit the class attended two shows, ‘Chemical reactions’ and ‘Sound’. The trip was very worthwhile and lots of fun was had while visiting the exhibits at W5.

The LCA1 and LCA2 classes visited Knockbarron Eco Wood and a local farm as part of the science subject Agriculture & Horticulture. Mr. Scales and Ms Hassett joined the group to take part in the farm and wood walk. On the farm, the cattle, the layout of the yard, silage and sheds were examined. In the woodland habitat the type of trees and shrubs growing in the forest were examined. It was a really enjoyable day and the rain thankfully stayed away.

A ‘Science Magic Show’ was demonstrated by the Transition Year students to the 1st and 2nd year students. These demonstrations were held in the hall, lots of different chemical and physical concepts were illustrated by these experiments. Ms. Hassett and Mr. Duggan organised a number of very enjoyable experiments to demonstrate the fun and magic of science. All the Transition Year students were in charge of demonstrating 1 or 2 experiments as part of the show. To say in finished up with a bang would be an understatement!

The final event organised to celebrate Science Week was a poster competition. The theme of the Science Week was ‘Shaping our World’. Students were asked to submit entries which conveyed this theme. Thank you to all the students that submitted entries and congratulations to all the winners. There were so many entries it was very difficult to choose first place but in the end Aoife Corcoran – Class 2B won with the following entry which the judges felt captured the theme ‘Shaping our World’
